Our Story

It started with a trailer built by a twelve-year-old

Adam and Karen Mathieson built Nomadic the same way they camp: no shortcuts, no imports badged as local, and nothing they wouldn't tow behind their own rig.

Adam Mathieson built his first trailer at twelve years of age out of what the shed had to offer. Some thirty-five years later — and fourteen of them in the Australian caravan industry — that instinct hasn't changed: if you're going to take your family somewhere hard to reach, build it properly.

That thinking became Nomadic Off-Road Campers: a family company headquartered on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, with Adam still across every build that leaves the factory.

Every model is designed in-house using CAD software. Every critical system — 12V, solar, 240v, air conditioning, gas, plumbing — is installed and tested in our factory by Australian tradespeople.

We call it Second Stage Manufacturing, and it's the reason we can put a nationwide lifetime warranty on our chassis.

The Road Here

  1. 1992

    The first trailer

Twelve-year-old Adam builds his first trailer to tow behind his bike out of left-over parts. The purpose — to earn $$ on weekends mowing lawns around the local neighbourhood.

  2. 2010

    First camper trailer

Adam builds his first camper trailer — lightweight, for beach camping.

  3. 2012

    Into the industry

Adam joins the Australian caravan industry, learning what holds up on corrugations — and what gets warrantied.

  4. 2017

    Swag Camper Trailers

Adam is promoted to General Manager of the company, taking it from building 15 campers per year to a $20m industry leader.

  5. 2023

    Nomadic Off-Road Campers

Adam pursues his own business interests following a failed opportunity to purchase Swag. In 2023, Nomadic is born. We proudly build around 250 caravans per year, specialising in pods through to 21ft touring solutions. Built on the Sunshine Coast, we now have dealerships in Townsville, Mackay, Caboolture, Ballina, Geelong, Adelaide and Perth.

  6. 2024

    Company stores north

Townsville, Mackay and Bundaberg open as Nomadic company stores, keeping support in family hands.

  7. 2026

    Coast to coast

Dealer partners in Ballina, Geelong, Adelaide and Perth put a Nomadic within reach of every state.

Second Stage Manufacturing

An honest word about how vans get built

Plenty of "Australian" caravans arrive in a container and get a sticker. We do it differently — and we'd rather show you the difference than talk around it. Shells and componentry are engineered to our CAD designs; then our Sunshine Coast trades fit and test every system that can leave you stranded: power, water, gas, cooling.

It costs more to do it this way. It's also why our warranty is longer than most, and why parts and support come from a factory you can walk into six days a week.

Family owned, family run

No board, no import brand behind the curtain. The people whose name is on the van answer the phone.
